Keeping Control
on 27 Apr 2007
Saturdays are a nightmare. I guess it’s the change in routine, the sudden relative freedom that a day away from school offers, that brings out all the issues regarding our son's behaviour. Rages, physical aggression and losing control are quite normal and the cause is usually something completely trivial. After having bumbled on and managed (just about) for the past 6 months or so, this week I've decided to be much more pro-active and try to get something sorted out as the whole family is being adversely affected.
Surprisingly, we've had a relatively successful week, thanks in great part to help given by our son's fantastic school and the lovely, caring staff that work there. Through the school our son has been seen by a cognitive psychologist and I've also had a meeting with the speech therapist. For them, it is a bit of an anomalous situation as it appears that he is really well behaved at school, mixing well with the other children and being popular amongst staff and students. They never see the other side of his behaviour which we are really pleased about, but at the same time it does make me question why it is that he can be so bad at home whilst being so good out. What are we doing wrong? Apparently, it is a good thing that he is able to be like this at home as it means he is comfortable and relaxed! Great!!
